First Introductions

Hello!

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my page and blog!

My name is Sheriden (Sheri if you see me out in the real world) - and I’m an author. I write fiction, mostly in science fiction and fantasy, but I have been known to dabble in some creative non-fiction and literary realism.

I was born in Sydney, Australia—Ryde, to be precise—and grew up in various suburbs around the north and west of the city.

My mother is Chinese. She was born in Hong Kong, orphaned, and then adopted by a white New Zealand family. They emigrated to Australia in the 1970s. She is a brilliant businesswoman and a terrible driver. I love her dearly.

My father is Australian-born but of Scottish descent. He’s from a family of engineers and worked in the laborious industry of machining, fitting and turning, and general metal fabrication.

My parents are brilliant and flawed in a myriad ways. Not the least being that my father is an alcoholic, and I have been no-contact with him for a number of years now. It hurts, but it is better for my mental health. Maybe one day it will change, but also maybe not.

I married my wonderful man in 2016, though we have been together much longer, (I am bisexual, but that is basically academic now that I am in a monogamous marriage). He has supported me through finishing my undergraduate bachelor's degree and then through my Master of Research. We go on many adventures together and work to create a home and life that we don’t want to escape.

We have adopted my father’s dog, Shadow, a cocker spaniel cross poodle. His drinking meant he could no longer care for her appropriately, so she came to me, and she has become my biggest joy. She’s nine years old and occasionally enjoys dressing up in jumpers. She always enjoys chasing a ball at the park and chewing on her toys next to us (or on us) on the couch.

But I am not made up of only the people that have come before me, or those who I have chosen to walk beside me, I am who I have chosen to become now.

I love dying my hair vibrant colours.

I have naturally dark brown hair, and while I love my natural colour, I love the feeling of flashing bright pink, green, purple, or blue hair! It does mean that any photo of me becomes instantly dated, but that is a problem I can live with.

I am crafty.

Papercraft, yarn craft, sewing, painting, drawing, sketching. I love it all.

I agree that buying supplies for hobbies and doing the hobbies are two separate hobbies, but I do try to regularly do the crafty things that bring me joy.

Lately, I’ve been channelling my papercraft and doodling into making zines.

I love making my own clothes, and I spent a whole year working on costumes for myself and a group of friends for my Sister-in-law’s Dungeons and Dragons themed wedding. I may yet post about that later.

I also like keeping my hands busy, so crocheting in front of a TV show is a go-to way to unwind. A cosy murder mystery, like Midsomer Murders, is one of my favourites.

I love console and computer games and have spent much of my life playing games of all sorts. It started with a Super NES when I was in primary school. Then, in high school, friends had an Xbox, and later, we had a PlayStation. Finally, friends helped me build my first gaming PC in 2007. Now I have a new gaming rig and a Nintendo Switch, and when I find time, crafting survival games, open-world RPGs, and cosy exploration and life sims are my favourites.

Naturally, as a writer, I also love to read, and there will be plenty of posts soon about reading, what I like, and what I love.

I love reading science fiction and fantasy, but I also love literary fiction, especially the likes of Haruki Murakami, and I have a soft spot for the Beat Generation of writers and their existentialism.

My writing is broadly ensconced within science fiction, and I have been focusing on a cyberpunk project for some time now. I have many ideas, some of which are bubbling away nicely, and others have fallen down the back of the stove. But this is the place to be to hear all about it, and I hope you will join me on the journey!

All the best,

Sheri
